Cranial Nerve Modalities[edit]

  • Modalities can be thought of as the type of communication that happens with neurons, which are different depending on the different nerves.
  • Special (SVE, SVA, SSA): to do with the senses.
  • Afferent (GSA, SSA, GVA): sensory neurons.
  • Efferent (GSE, GVE, SVE): motor neurons to skeletal and smooth muscle; also secretomotor neurons to glands.
  • Somatic: e.g. innervations of muscles that can be voluntarily controlled.
  • Visceral: e.g. innervations of muscles that cannot be voluntarily controlled.
