Study these basics before entering this department:

  1. GCS
  2. VAS pain scale
  3. Headaches.
  4. Seizures.
  5. Epilepsy.
  6. Cranial nerve exam
    1. Central or peripheral? UMN or LMN lesion? (e.g. How do you exclude Bell's palsy using cranial nerve exam?).
    2. Where is the lesion if abnormal?
  7. Physiological and pathological reflex examinations.
    1. What does positive or negative look like and what it means.
  8. Innervation of the surface of the body.
  9. Breathing patterns
  10. Common neurological diseases, how to diagnose them clinically and from lab/radiology results, and risk factors:
    1. HNP.
    2. LBP.
    3. Vertigo.
    4. Pain, paresis.
    5. Stroke.
      1. Hemorrhagic, ischaemic, and TIA.
      2. CT scan interpretation.
    6. Paralysis, paresis.
  11. General anatomy of the cranium, brain, senses, nervous system, and spine.
  12. DCML, ALS pathways.
  13. Javanese terms for various types of numbness, pain, dizziness, and other similar feelings.


Purchase and bring this equipment with you:

  1. Stethoscope.
  2. Penlight.
  3. Reflex hammer with (slightly dulled) pointy edge on the handle.
  4. Toothpicks or a dull needle (sometimes comes with the reflex hammer).
  5. Cotton sticks (q-tips).
  6. Watch with second-hand.
  7. Mask, since there are B20 patients and either you may infect them or they may infect you (with TB, for example).
